5 Ways to Celebrate National Coffee Day

You KNOW I couldn’t let this day go by without paying tribute to one of my favorite foods (yes, I consider it a food—a food group, actually) on the planet: I’m talking about coffee. And turns out I don’t need a reason to celebrate…this little round-up includes coffee-related recipes that I’ve created this year with no holiday in mind. Coffee in itself is celebration-worthy, I say. So, pick your poison below, and I hope there’s lots of buzz surrounding your day! Valencia Steamer

I turned on my heat yesterday, wore a rain jacket over the weekend, and kinda wished I had an extra blanket on my bed last night. Yeah, I think this fall thing might actually be happening. (Yipee!!) So, it’s time to switch over from evening coolers to evening steamers—which is basically just steamed milk with something delicious and non-caffeinated stirred in. First up? Valencia steamers! Cozy up with one of these after dinner—such a delicious nightcap. Cheers! M Valencia Steamer Single Serving | Vegan Prep time: 5 min (plus time to make a batch of Valencia syrup) Ingredients: 2 tablespoons Valencia syrup 10 ounces of unsweetened hemp milk (or your favorite non-dairy milk) A few pieces of candied orange zest (optional) Directions: Pour Valencia syrup in a 12 ounce mug. Heat hemp milk using an espresso machine, stove top, or microwave. Stir milk into mug with syrup. Garnish with candied orange zest. (This will only work if you use an espresso machine and can make the milk foamy–otherwise the pieces will sink to the bottom. …

Pineapple-Ginger Elixir

I used to order something similar to this from a juice bar in Seattle all the time—often enough that I was able to guestimate on the ingredients so I could make it at home, too. This juice is really delicious, but is especially great when you feel like you’re coming down with a cold or flu. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it will cure you, but it’ll definitely take the edge off. I always feel better after I have a glassful. Be warned, this one is a little on the sweet side. For that reason, I use a whole lemon to give it a good balance of tartness, as well as a big piece of ginger. (I like to feel the burn when I’m a little under the weather.) If you can handle the ginger, do it—it’s great for you. But if not, do about half the amount. It’s still good for you, regardless of the dose size. Enjoy! Hemp Milk Latte

I’m a BIG coffee person. Or, latte person, to be more specific. So, when I started eliminating dairy in my diet, my morning latte was one area where I was unwilling to sacrifice on taste and quality. Soy is great, but I started to get tired of it after a while, so I tried almond milk, then coconut milk. Both are delicious in other things, like smoothies, etc., but they tasted really watery to me in a latte. I just couldn’t. Nope. Not gonna work. Someone suggested hemp milk, and I resisted for a while—it just sounded to hippie-ish or something, which was a dumb and total non-reason not to try it And when I finally did, that was it. There was no going back. It was thick, creamy, had a very neutral taste, and–most importantly—made great foam.  Hemp milk was everything this latte addict could have ever dreamed of. If you haven’t tried it yet, you must. My favorite brand is Pacific, and I usually go for the unsweetened vanilla. I use an espresso machine to whip it all …
